Dorothy Broeker

Dorothy Ann Broeker, 86, of Burlington, died at 4:10 p.m.Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center in Burlington. 

Born Aug. 22, 1926, inBurlington, she was the daughter of Ralph Lewis and Mary Frances Evans Blake. On Dec. 5, 1946, she married Edward Broeker Jr. in Oswego, Kan. He died Aug. 9, 1984. 

Mrs. Broeker grew up near Mediapolis, graduated fromMediapolis High Schoolin 1944, and was the first female school bus driver while in high school. In 1945, she graduated from Burlington Beauty Academy. She owned her first salon in Mediapolis, and in 1962 opened Dorothy Ann Salon of Beauty, later known as Dorothy Ann's Hair Designers, inBurlington. 

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. 

She was a member of National Cosmetology Association, Cosmetologists Barber Association, Burlington Hair Fashion and Professional Cosmetologist Association Affiliate 2. She also was a member of American Business and Professional Women's Association and ran their bingo fundraising program, Rotary, Kiwanis and Chamber of Commerce. She volunteered as a hairdresser for Players Workshop and Miss Burlington pageants, was a partner in Junior Achievement and helped the Battered Women's Shelter and Neighborhood Watch. She enjoyed boating. 

Survivors include one son, Tom Broeker of Burlington; one daughter, Tonja Binder of Burlington; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Scott of Burlington; one brother, John Blake of Burlington; nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. 

Visitation will be from9 a.m.to7 p.m.Thursday at Thielen Funeral Home inBurlington, where family will receive friends from5to7 p.m. 

The funeral for Mrs. Broeker will be at 10:30 a.m.Friday at Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Trevor Davis officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home after the service. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m.Friday in Kossuth Cemetery. 

Memorials have been established for Grace United Methodist Church and Alzheimer's Association.
